6 Things I Regret From My First Trip to Africa

I thought I had everything figured out for my first-time trip to Kenya — bags packed, Google Maps starred, and itineraries planned to a T. But Africa had a few lessons in store for me. From underestimating jet lag to over-relying on food delivery apps, here are 6 things I wish I had done differently — so you can plan smarter for your own Kenya adventure.

Whether you're flying from Southeast Asia to Africa, or you’re a Muslim traveler planning a halal-friendly trip to Nairobi, this list will save you time, energy, and possibly even money.

1. Underestimating the Jet Lag

Flying 9 hours from Malaysia, across a 5-hour time zone difference is no joke. I landed ready to explore, but my body clock had other plans. I was wide awake at 4AM and crashing hard by late afternoon. It really affected how much I could do in a day.

Tip: If you're flying long-haul (especially from Asia), give yourself an extra day just to adjust. Trust me — your itinerary will thank you for it.

2. Not Pre-Booking Extra Meals on the Flight

On my 9-hour flight with AirAsia, I assumed the single pre-included meal was it. Big mistake. You can actually prebook a second meal through the app — it’s cheaper than buying onboard and honestly a lifesaver for long-haul flights.

Tip: If you're flying AirAsia FlyThru to Africa, go to the app and add an extra meal for comfort and peace of mind.

3. Only Doing Day Trips Instead of Staying in a Game Reserve

I did day trips to Nairobi National Park and Hell’s Gate, and while they were gorgeous, I can’t stop thinking about what it would’ve been like to stay overnight in the wild.

Waking up to the sound of zebras or lions in Masai Mara or Amboseli National Park? That would've been unforgettable.

Tip: Plan at least 2–3 nights in a proper game reserve if it’s your first time visiting Kenya. It’s one of the best ways to experience authentic African nature.

4. Bringing a Drone Without Knowing the Rules

Kenya is strict about drone regulations. The moment immigration sees it, you're asked for multiple licenses and permits, and if you can’t produce them, they’ll confiscate your drone — and you’ll be charged around USD5 per day for holding it.

Tip: Unless you have the proper commercial or media clearances, it’s better to leave the drone at home. The hassle isn’t worth it.

5. Skipping Local Eats for Food Delivery

Food delivery was super convenient, especially after long days out. But in hindsight, I regret not heading out to explore more of Kenya’s halal-friendly food scene — because it’s surprisingly accessible!

From street food to sit-down restaurants, Nairobi is home to many Muslim-friendly options that are safe, delicious, and full of local flavor.

Tip: Research halal eateries beforehand or just ask the locals — we had some of the best chapatis, biryanis, and samosas on the go!

6. Not Extending the Trip

I only had a week in Kenya, and while we squeezed in a lot, I wish I’d planned for two weeks instead of one. That extra time could’ve meant crossing the border to Tanzania or even hopping over to Ethiopia — both of which are accessible by road or short flights.

Tip: If you're already in East Africa, maximize your time by adding a second destination. It’s a long way to fly — might as well make it count!

So... Don’t Do What I Did!

If you're planning your first Africa trip or looking for Kenya travel tips for first-timers, take it from someone who learned the hard way — these small mistakes can shape your whole experience.

Save this, share it, and plan smarter — so your trip to Africa is nothing short of unforgettable.
