Halal Food in Kuala Lumpur: Dolly Dim Sum Avenue K

Dolly Dim Sum isn't something unfamiliar to locals or frequent visitors of Kuala Lumpur. It has been around for quite some time and they have quite a number of outlets in the city but the one that Fazwan and I visited was the one at Avenue K Mall (right opposite the KLCC Twin Towers). My Malaysian friends have warned me beforehand that this was an overpriced and overrated place to dine at but we thought we'd give it a try, since we both had never dined here before.

We dropped by at around noon on a weekend and the place was already starting to flood with patrons. We decided to come pretty early specifically to avoid the crowd. Many of the Google reviews online mentioned about having to queue for hours on the weekends, before being given a seat.

You will need to wait to be seated, where a staff will then provide you with an order sheet on a mini clip board and the menu. If I remember it correctly, the menu didn't have prices listed down but the order sheet does - which means that you will only know the prices of each dish when you're seated in the restaurant itself.

Their Dolly Moza Roll was pretty satisfying. Lots of cheese oozing out from this one.

Dolly's Fried Chicken Wings covered in thick crispy batter.

I personally enjoyed their Chewy Meat Croquette but the portion of the filling was very very disappointing.

We really enjoyed these sweet and savoury Roasted BBQ Buns.

What we didn't like:

We really liked the aesthetics of the place. It was well decorated and there was a lot of sun coming in through their tall windows. The quality of food was also pretty good, other than the disappointing Meat Croquette, everything else was satisfying. The availability of staff was scarce (probably due to lack of manpower) but service was considerably good, even though the food took awhile to be served, the service standards made up for it.

What we didn't like:

It is slightly on the pricier side at about RM110 per person. However, items are priced per dish so you pay for what you order. We understand that this is not something that most people would enjoy - at least not on a regular basis.

This restaurant also shares the dining space with Fresca - a Mexican restaurant & bar. We didn't mind because Dolly's is halal certified but I thought I'd just mention it here, in case it matters to you that there is alcohol served within close proximity.

Other than the price, I think it's a pretty decent spot to celebrate special occasions or business lunches. Do give it a try for yourself if you haven't had the chance to!
